
Akinola Davies Jr. ‘s award-winning Nigerian Film set for Nationwide Release. Following its historic run at international festivals and sweeping victories at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA), My Father’s Shadow has announced its return to cinemas across Nigeria.
The film, which follows the story of two young brothers spending a single day with their estranged father, a journalist and activist, became the first Nigerian film selected for the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival. It was also recognized at the BAFTA Awards, Gotham Awards, and British Independent Film Awards (BIFA).
Directed by Akinola Davies Jr. in his debut feature and co-written with his brother Wale Davies, My Father’s Shadow, set against the backdrop of the June 12, 1993, election crisis in Lagos, has been hailed as a milestone in African cinema. The production, which has been praised for its authenticity and emotional depth, has an intentionally small cast that includes the father, Sope Dirisu, and his two sons, Godwin Chiemerie Egbo and Chibuike Marvellous.
The narrative of My Father’s Shadow explores themes of family, memory, and nationhood. By blending personal loss with Nigeria’s struggle for democracy, the film captivates audiences and has won numerous awards. Its success has been celebrated as a turning point for Nollywood, establishing Nigerian cinema on the global stage.
The Film’s Nationwide release is set for June 5, ahead of Nigeria’s Democracy Day, June 12, inviting audiences to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey. FilmOne Entertainment will handle the distribution of My Father’s Shadow after its release.
