Let’s dive into the Nigerian influencers who are now shining in film.

Nollywood is bursting with talent, and Nigeria, as a whole, is home to an endless pool of creative minds. Some of the biggest names we know today started out as content creators and social influencers. But some have gone a step further, bringing their creativity to the big screen and taking on acting roles.

Mr Macaroni

Born Adebowale Debo Adedayo, started as an actor before venturing into comedy skits and social influencing. Although he appeared in films and soap operas early in his career, it was his online presence that propelled him into the limelight. In 2019, his satirical skits, featuring recurring characters like “Daddy Wa” and “Professor Hardlife,” became a hit. Known for his humour and catchphrases like “Ooin” and “Freaky freaky,” Mr Macaroni quickly gained a massive following. His ability to address real societal issues through comedy cemented his reputation not just as an entertainer but also as a social advocate, especially during the #EndSARS movement.

Despite his roots in acting, Mr Macaroni’s recent film roles have reaffirmed his talent. He has appeared in notable Nollywood productions, including Ponzi (2021), Ayinla (2021), Aníkúlápó (2022), Lisabi (2024) and Freedom Way (2024). His performances reflect his versatility. Today, Mr Macaroni is recognised not just for his online influence but also as a bona fide actor making waves in Nigerian cinema.

Toke Makinwa

Toke Makinwa is a media personality celebrated for her versatility as a radio host, television presenter, entrepreneur, and author. Known for hosting The Morning Drive on Rhythm 93.7 FM and her popular YouTube vlog series, Toke Moments, she has cultivated a strong personal brand by blending entertainment with lifestyle content.

Her influence is further amplified through partnerships with major brands like Maggi, Ciroc, and Oppo Mobile, solidifying her position among Africa’s leading female show hosts. Additionally, Toke has built business ventures such as Toke Makinwa Luxury, a handbag line, and Glow by TM, a skincare brand, extending her presence beyond traditional media.

Layi Wasabi

Layi Wasabi, born Isaac Ayomide Olayiwola is a comedian, content creator, and actor known for his witty satire and humorous skits. He gained popularity in 2021 through viral videos, often portraying a comical lawyer and other sarcastic characters inspired by his upbringing in Osogbo. Despite his comedic success, he holds a law degree from Bowen University.

His acting credits include roles in Aníkúlápó: Rise of the Sceptre (2024) and Adire (2023), with the latter earning ₦31 million at the box office. Layi has collaborated with major brands like Chicken Republic and Flutterwave and is signed under Penzaaraville Africa.

Layi’s innovative approach to comedy, which avoids stereotypes and excessive sound effects, has earned him multiple recognitions, including the Emerging Force award at the 2023 Trendupp Awards and the Best Digital Content Creator prize at the 2024 AMVCA. He was also part of Meta’s Creators of Tomorrow campaign and won the Revelation of the Year award at the Nigerian Comedy Awards. Layi, who once identified as an introvert, credits content creation with helping him become more sociable. He remains focused on evolving with the times and standing out in Nigeria’s skit-making scene.

Kie Kie

Bukunmi Adeaga-Ilori, popularly known as Kie Kie, is a renowned content creator, model, and skit maker whose witty, engaging skits have earned her widespread popularity, particularly through her YouTube channel, Kie Kie TV. Known for her comedic creativity, Kie Kie has carved a niche for herself in entertainment, blending humour with fashion and lifestyle content. Her growing online influence has led to several brand partnerships and established her as a prominent figure in Nigeria’s digital media space, where she continues to captivate audiences with her entertaining content.

Leveraging her popularity as a skit maker, Kie Kie has successfully transitioned into acting, adding depth to her creative portfolio. She has appeared in films like Muri & Ko (2024) as Shalewa, Searching (2024) as Dami, Wives on Strike: The Uprising (2024) as Iya Bola, and Queen Lateefah (2024). Her versatility is further demonstrated in her roles in Forever My Girl (2023), Different Strokes (2023), and House of Money (2022). With projects like Merry Go Wrong set to release soon, Kie Kie continues to expand her reach in the entertainment industry, seamlessly blending her comedic roots with her on-screen performances.

Ariyiike Dimples

Ariyike Dorcas Owolagba, popularly known as Ariyiike Dimples, is a Nigerian TV host, podcaster, fashion blogger, and actress. With a degree in Mass Communication from Lagos State University, she began her media career hosting shows on platforms like SuperSport, TVC News, and UBA’s Red TV. Known for hosting Urban Kitchen and producing SuperSport’s SuperPicks, she has also worked as a director at Aristokrat Records.

Her engaging personality and versatility in entertainment earned her recognition, including a feature on the YNaija Power List of 2020. Ariyiike’s influence extends to brand endorsements with Pepsi and Friska Tea, as well as hosting her podcast, #GirlTalkWithAriyiike.

In addition to her media presence, Ariyiike has steadily expanded her reach into Nollywood since 2015. She starred in films like Diary of a Lagos Girl (2016) as Folake and Backup Wife (2018) as Joan. More recent roles include Omowon in Kunle Afolayan’s Aníkúlápó (2022) and a performance in 13 Letters (2021). Ariyiike’s filmography also features titles like Love in the Wrong Places (2018) and the comedy series Okrika. As she continues to balance her work in TV, fashion, and film, Ariyiike has become a prominent figure in Nigerian entertainment.

Broda Shaggi

Broda Shaggi, born Samuel Animashaun Perry is a comedian, actor, and musician known for his satirical comedy and vibrant presence across social media. His breakthrough came through parody skits such as Jesu in Mushin, which established him as a household name. With his comedy rooted in everyday Nigerian experiences, Shaggi’s skits gained traction on Instagram, eventually leading him into Nollywood, where he has continued to shine.

He is a two-time Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) winner for Best Actor in a Comedy, earning accolades in both 2022 and 2023. Over the years, Broda Shaggi has diversified into acting, music, and television. His filmography includes roles in notable films like Omo Ghetto: The Saga (2020), Dwindle (2021), King of Thieves (2022), Inside Life (2022), and Something Like Gold (2023). In 2024, he continues to expand his creative output with roles in projects such as Alaye, Meeting Funmi’s Parents, and My Fake Celebrity Boyfriend. Known for his comedic antics and ability to engage audiences with his relatable character, Shaggi has cemented his reputation as a key figure in Nigeria’s entertainment scene.
