Kunle Afolayan Productions (KAP) has partnered with the U.S. Embassy to host a filmmaking workshop for aspiring filmmakers in Lagos. This four-day training, running from November 12 to 16, aims to provide hands-on experience in directing and cinematography.

The event is part of Kunle Afolayan’s ongoing efforts to mentor and nurture young Nigerian filmmakers, building on successful collaborations with international partners like the French Embassy and a German company, which have trained over 10,000 youths. These partnerships have not only helped improve filmmaking skills but also created permanent job opportunities for some of the trainees within KAP.

At the workshop, U.S.-based film professionals Angel Williams and Erin Wesley are sharing their expertise, while Nigerian film veterans like Sola Sobowale and Tunde Kelani lend their support. The event kicked off with the third edition of KAP’s Reel Circle, a platform for filmmakers to exchange ideas and gain knowledge.

Afolayan emphasized the importance of such partnerships in empowering the next generation of Nigerian filmmakers. He believes the future of the industry lies in hands-on training and exposure to global industry standards. He also highlighted the significant impact of these partnerships in promoting cultural exchange and raising the profile of Nigerian cinema on the global stage.

Will Stevens, the U.S. Consul General in Nigeria, praised the initiative as a symbol of the ongoing cultural connection between the U.S. and Nigeria, stressing the role of film in fostering mutual understanding and expanding business and tourism ties.

With the support of global industry professionals, this partnership marks a significant step forward in the development of Nigeria’s creative industry, providing emerging filmmakers with the tools and networks needed to succeed on both local and international platforms.

This workshop serves as another milestone in Kunle Afolayan’s efforts to shape the future of Nigerian cinema while building meaningful connections across borders.
