Niyi Akinmolayan’s Nollywood epic Colours of Fire, which blends African mythology, pan-African fashion, and cutting-edge visual effects, is coming to Netflix in August. Initially released in theatres in December 2025, the film now makes its global streaming debut, bringing with it the promise of a new cinematic language that Akinmolayan calls Afrofusion cinema.
The story of Colours of Fire follows around two rival tribes: the Blues, who have long held dominance through their expertise in fabric-making and their sacred blue magic known as Elu, and the Reds, who are rising with their own colours and methods. Rumours spread that the Red Tribe’s power is derived from blood and dark magic, fueling paranoia and mistrust among the tribes. When reports of a monstrous creature terrorizing blue farmers reach the tribe’s leaders, warrior Akinbode is sent to slay the beast. However, he instead encounters Moremi, a woman whose very existence challenges the lies and propaganda that have long divided the tribes.
The film’s themes extend well beyond its mythological setting. It addresses issues such as inherited hatred, propaganda, love, reconciliation, cultural identity, deception, and sacrifice. Colours of Fire explores how misinformation and fear can divide communities, while also highlighting how love and truth can unite them.
The story centers around Moremi, played by Osas Ighodaro, whose performance adds depth to the film with a mix of strength and vulnerability. Uzor Arukwe delivers a compelling portrayal of Akinbode, a warrior torn between his duty and a newfound truth. The cast also features Mercy Aigbe, Gabriel Afolayan, Shaffy Bello, and Femi Jacobs.
Netflix’s acquisition of Colours of Fire signals the growing global appetite for African cinema. By bringing the film to a worldwide audience, the platform amplifies Nollywood’s voice and showcases its ability to tell stories that are both culturally specific and universally resonant.
