Iyanu, an animated series rooted in Nigerian mythology, is set to premiere on Cartoon Network on April 5, followed by its streaming debut on Max on April 6. Created by Nigerian filmmaker Roye Okupe and produced by Lion Forge Entertainment, the series blends tradition, fantasy, and modern animation to bring an unforgettable adventure to life.
Adapted from Okupe’s graphic novel Iyanu: Child of Wonder, the story follows a young orphan living in the kingdom of Yorubaland. Iyanu longs for an ordinary life, but everything changes when she discovers divine powers unseen since the legendary Age of Wonders. As a growing darkness threatens her world, she embarks on a perilous journey with her friends—Biyi, a fearless adventurer; Toye, a brilliant scholar; and Ekun, a mystical leopard. Together, they must uncover long-buried secrets and embrace their destinies to stop the looming evil.
At its core, Iyanu is a celebration of Nigerian culture, weaving mythology, history, and music into a vibrant, action-packed narrative. The series also stands out for its commitment to authentic representation, featuring an all-African voice cast. Serah Johnson leads as Iyanu, joined by Okey Jude as Biyi, Samuel Kugbiyi as Toye, and Adesua Etomi-Wellington as Olori. Other notable names include Blossom Chukwujekwu, Stella Damasus, Shaffy Bello, and Ike Ononye, all bringing their characters to life.
Roye Okupe, who serves as showrunner and executive producer, has been deeply involved in shaping the adaptation, ensuring it remains true to its roots while delivering an exciting and visually stunning experience. Michael Ouweleen, President of Cartoon Network and Adult Swim, described Iyanu as a unique and magical story that audiences will soon experience. Lion Forge Entertainment’s CEO, David Steward II, emphasized the series’ significance in bringing culturally rich narratives to a global audience.
Following its U.S. debut, Iyanu will expand its reach worldwide. On June 13, the entire first season will be available in 44 African countries on Showmax, while viewers in the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland can stream it later this summer on ITVX.
With compelling characters, breathtaking animation, and a story that bridges the past and the present, Iyanu is more than just an animated series—it is a landmark moment for African storytelling in mainstream media. As it makes its way to audiences across the globe, it invites viewers into a world where history, magic, and heroism collide.
