The Nigerian film industry is in mourning following the passing of acclaimed filmmaker Dimeji Ajibola on Sunday, November 3, 2024, after a prolonged illness. Known for his pioneering work in Nigerian cinema and animation, Ajibola’s death was announced by his colleague Samuel Olatunji, who shared his grief on Instagram:

“Dimeji Ajibola was my client and guy! So sad to hear this sad news. Rest in peace to a great guy!”

Actor Bolanle Ninalowo also expressed his sorrow, saying, “I love you, brother, and I miss you, Dimeji Ajibola. May God heal your family and loved ones. Till we meet again, didi dox, rest on the champ.”

Ajibola’s career, which spanned nearly two decades, was marked by his innovative contributions to both the Nigerian film and advertising industries. He began his journey as an animator, where his talent and creativity quickly captured attention. Early in his career, he worked on The Campus Queen (2004), bringing his animation expertise to the popular Nigerian musical, which blended African culture and youthful energy. This project set the stage for Ajibola’s career, highlighting his ability to infuse Nigerian narratives with dynamic visual storytelling.

An alumnus of the New York Film Academy and Animation Mentor Academy in California, Ajibola pursued further studies in visual effects at VFXLearning. He expanded his skills in cinematography, advanced animation, and visual effects, which allowed him to push the boundaries of Nollywood. Ajibola’s dedication to localising his craft led him to pioneer high-quality animations and visual effects within Nigeria; achievements that had previously been outsourced abroad. This approach contributed to award-winning advertisements for major brands such as MTN and Coca-Cola.

Ajibola’s directorial debut, Hoodrush (2012), stands out as Nigeria’s first urban musical film, acclaimed for its creative integration of music and drama. The film won Best African Movie at the Green Me International Film Festival in Germany in 2013 and earned twelve nominations at the Nollywood Movies Awards in 2012, winning Best Male Act and Best Soundtrack. Ajibola’s talent for combining a powerful narrative with musical elements elevated Hoodrush, making it a groundbreaking film in Nollywood’s landscape.

In 2017, Ajibola directed Ovy’s Voice, which quickly became the top-ranked film on Iroko TV for the year. His 2020 film Ratnik, a post-apocalyptic thriller, showcased his adeptness at blending high-concept themes with technical expertise, earning him critical acclaim. Most recently, he directed Shanty Town (2023), a Nigerian crime thriller series that underscored his versatility across various genres, followed by successful works such as Slum King and Wura.

Ajibola’s enduring impact on Nollywood is not only evident in his films but also through his role as CEO and Technical Director of Flipsyde Studios Ltd., where he continuously worked with local talent to bring authentic Nigerian perspectives to his projects. His contributions to the animation and visual effects sectors in Nigeria have set a new standard for what is possible within the industry, inspiring countless filmmakers and animators.
