The S16 Film Festival, a celebration of daring African filmmaking, begins today, December 10, at the Alliance Française de Lagos. Organized by the Surreal16 Collective, the festival celebrates African storytelling that challenges traditional Nollywood narratives. It provides a platform for experimental films, fresh perspectives, and bold themes.

Over the years, the festival has cemented its reputation as a hub for cutting-edge African cinema. By creating an environment that fosters artistic freedom, it has become a space where filmmakers can explore unconventional narratives and stylistic approaches. The festival aims to elevate African stories that defy stereotypes while amplifying voices that are often overlooked. Its carefully curated lineup of films reflects a commitment to breaking creative boundaries and inspiring the next generation of storytellers.

This year’s lineup includes On Becoming a Guinea Fowl, a surreal tale exploring identity and self-discovery, and Hanami: Blossom, a moving story inspired by the Japanese tradition of cherry blossoms. Other highlights include Red Moon, a suspenseful narrative about love and vengeance, and Shadows, a psychological drama delving into themes of resilience and inner turmoil.

The festival isn’t just about film screenings. Attendees can engage in thought-provoking workshops, masterclasses, and panel discussions, led by some of Africa’s most influential filmmakers. These sessions aim to inspire dialogue, foster connections, and empower emerging creatives in the industry.

The three-day festival, backed by partners like the French Embassy and A Whitespace Creative Agency, creates a collaborative space for filmmakers and enthusiasts. As the event opens today, it invites attendees to immerse themselves in stories that push boundaries and redefine African cinema.
