Nollywood is stepping into new territory with Makemation, Africa’s first feature film centred on artificial intelligence. Scheduled to hit cinemas on Good Friday, 18 April 2025, the film blends entertainment with technology, telling a story of resilience, innovation, and hope.
A Story of Determination and Innovation
Makemation is a coming-of-age drama that follows a brilliant yet impoverished young girl in Lagos, Nigeria. Despite the struggles of poverty, she secures a place at the country’s most prestigious tech school. Faced with numerous obstacles, she must prove her genius and find solutions to save her family. The film explores how young Africans, particularly girls, are using technology and AI to address real-world challenges.
According to its creators, Makemation aims to inspire young minds by showcasing STEM education, digital skills, gender equality, and financial literacy, all through the lens of an emotionally engaging and humorous tale.
Cast and Production
The film features an ensemble cast of Nollywood actors. Richard Mofe-Damijo stars as Chief Abiye Douglas, while Shaffy Bello plays Professor Aarin Orazulike. Chioma Chukwuka takes on the role of Ginika Sodangi, and Ibrahim Chatta plays Jato Sodangi. Tony Umez appears as Dr Layi Jejelaiye, while Ali Nuhu portrays Football Coach Gyang. Other notable cast members include Wunmi Toriola, Tomi Ojo, Chimezie Imo, Jude Chukwuka, Jide Kosoko, Yvonne Jegede, and many more.
Produced by Rise Interactive Studios, the film is led by Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji as Producer, Executive Producer, Production Designer, and Co-Screenwriter. Michael “AMA Psalmist” Akinrogunde directs and co-produces, while Richard Mofe-Damijo and Shaffy Bello serve as Co-Executive Producers. Technical support comes from Klink Studios (camera and grip equipment) and Jungle Filmworks (lighting and electrical equipment).
