Plot
‘Conversations in Transit‘centres around three women at a crossroads in their lives. Hajara, an heiress in an abusive relationship, is considering escaping her abusive fiancé to reunite with her lover. Ini, a jaded event planner, meets Emeka, a romantic stranger who challenges her cynical view of life. Adeola, a career-driven woman is forced to confront her husband Lekan’s infidelity as he fights to win her back. Their stories intertwine with those of the other passengers, creating a layered narrative that captures the chaos and serendipity of life in transit.
The confined train setting is a melting pot of drama, humour, and revelations, but some plot devices strain credibility. For instance, Hajara’s pregnancy test conveniently falling out of her bag raises questions. A woman desperate to conceal her pregnancy from a controlling fiancé would logically hide such a sensitive item more securely, especially in a large handbag which would have zipped compartments. This oversight detracts from an otherwise compelling story.
Story
The story’s strength lies in how it uses the train’s confined space to foster interactions between characters, revealing personal struggles and driving the narrative forward for example when Adeola offers to help another passenger with her baby we learn about her and Lekan’s struggle to have children, which also happens to be one of the things that led to the unraveling of their relationship.
The decision to showcase these dynamics through conversations overheard or shared with other passengers enriches the film’s texture and offers a slice-of-life feel.
Performances
The cast delivers a range of impressive performances. Rahama Sadau captures Hajara’s vulnerability and fear, drawing viewers into her plight. Uzee Usman is believably menacing as Umar, though his boldness in such a public setting feels exaggerated. Osas Ighodaro shines as Adeola, bringing depth to a character torn between forgiveness and self-preservation, while Richard Mofe-Damijo is effortlessly compelling as Lekan.
Tana Adelana and Tope Tedela inject charm into the film as Ini and Emeka, their chemistry providing moments of warmth and humour. Alex Ekubo’s brief appearance as Muhammed also leaves a strong impression. Even the supporting cast, who spend much of the film observing the drama, contribute significantly with their nuanced reactions.
Technical Aspects
The decision to set the story entirely on a train is a standout choice, showcasing Nigeria’s infrastructure while creating an intimate setting for the unfolding drama. The sound design effectively builds suspense, and the transitions between shots are thoughtfully executed, such as the moment when Lekan’s blurred vision is clarified by putting on his glasses.
However, the drone shots do not do justice to the production, as they glaringly appear in really amateur in quality and movement.
Final Thoughts
The film does an excellent job of portraying the chaos and unpredictability and beauty of rail travel in Nigeria, all while exploring serious themes like abuse, infidelity, and personal redemption. The humour, whether intentional or incidental, added a layer of relatability, particularly in scenes where passengers couldn’t help but eavesdrop on others’ drama.
That said, some elements—like the plausibility of Umar’s behaviour towards Hajara on a crowded train—required a greater suspension of disbelief.
Verdict
‘Conversations in Transit’ is a compelling tale of intersecting lives, set against the backdrop of a journey that changes destinies. While it stumbles in minor areas, the strong performances, heartfelt storytelling, and creative direction make it a worthwhile watch. We’re giving it a solid 4-star rating. The movie is available to rent on Circuits.
