The highly anticipated historical fantasy Osamede is set for a nationwide cinematic release in Nigeria in the fourth quarter of 2025. It brings to life the mystical world of the 1897 Benin Kingdom, where ancient power and colonial resistance collide. Directed by AMVCA-winning filmmaker James Omokwe, best known for epic Africa Magic series like Ajoche, Riona, Diiche, and Cheta’M. Osamede tells the story of a young orphaned girl who discovers she holds the power of the Aruosa Stone. A sacred force she must wield to protect her people from British invasion.
The feature film had its world premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Market on May 17, 2025, at the Pavillon Afriques. It screened alongside My Father’s Shadow by acclaimed Nigerian-British filmmaker Akinola Davies Jr. This international debut served as a powerful endorsement of Osamede’s cinematic quality, storytelling depth, and global appeal. This move offers a glimpse into the caliber of film Nigerian audiences can expect upon its nationwide release later in the year.
The film stars Ivie Okujaye Egboh, Lexan Aisosa Peters, William Benson, Etinosa Idemudia, Lancelot Imasuen, Tosin Adeyemi, Alexander Bud, and Paulo Bazele. It is executive-produced by Lilian Olubi under Gold Lilies Productions and written by Lolo Eremie.
Shot in Benin City and steeped in the culture, traditions, and mythology of the ancient Benin Empire. Osamede explores themes of resilience, identity, female empowerment, and historical legacy. It offers a unique fusion of Nigerian history and speculative fantasy.
With distribution by Nile Entertainment, Osamede promises to be a cinematic event when it hits Nigerian theatres in late 2025. Making it a defining moment for Nollywood’s growing epic fantasy genre and a tribute to African storytelling on the global stage.
