Nollywood’s mystical thriller Agemo, directed by debut filmmaker Moshood Abiola, continues its impressive international festival run. The film has now been selected for the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it will compete in several categories, including Best Director – International, Best First-Time Film, Best Actress – Nollywood/African Film, Best Child/Teen Actor, Best Hair and Makeup, Best Graphic Design, and Best Cinematography.
TIFF, celebrating its 50th edition this year, will run from 4–15 September 2025. Over the years, the globally recognised festival has increasingly embraced Nollywood, with past selections such as Freedom Way, Half of a Yellow Sun, Lionheart, The Wedding Party, and The Legend of the Vagabond Queen of Lagos.
Agemo first premiered in 2024 at the Red Movie Awards, followed by a screening at the Amsterdam International Awards. And later on, the African International Film Festival (AFRIFF), where it won the Best Female Performance. The film also earned two nominations — Best Lead Actress and Best Cinematography — at the 2024 African Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA).
Penned by Esther Olayinka, the film delves into themes of women’s empowerment, supernatural manipulation, and the complex dynamics of power. The cast features Uzoamaka Onuoha, Darasimi Nadi, Jide Kosoko, Aramide Lawal, Foluke Daramola-Salako, and Yinka Quadri.
Despite its growing acclaim, producers have yet to announce a cinema or streaming release date, leaving audiences eager to experience Agemo beyond the festival circuit.
