Nollywood star, Lateef Adedimeji, is set to captivate audiences with his latest project, Lisabi, a two-part epic biopic scheduled for release on Netflix. This film, which delves into the life and legacy of the revered Yoruba hero Lisabi, promises to be a monumental addition to the growing slate of Nigerian historical dramas.

Lisabi narrates the story of an 18th-century Egba farmer who courageously led a rebellion against the powerful and oppressive Oyo Empire. The film aims to portray Lisabi as a figure of defiance whose leadership ultimately resulted in the defeat of over 6,000 Oyo soldiers, securing independence for the Egba people after years of subjugation. His story is a testament to Yoruba resilience and marks a pivotal moment in the region’s history.

The biopic is structured in two parts: Lisabi: The Uprising, which will premiere on 27th September 2024, with its sequel, Lisabi: A Legend is Born, slated for release in January 2025. The first part focuses on Lisabi’s rise as a leader and the initial sparks of rebellion, while the sequel will explore the aftermath of his victory and the enduring impact of his legacy on Yoruba history.

Lisabi features a formidable cast of Nollywood’s finest, including Femi Adebayo, Odunlade Adekola, Ibrahim Itele Yekini, Ibrahim Chattah, and Mo Bimpe, alongside Lateef Adedimeji himself. Directed by the acclaimed Niyi Akinmolayan, known for his ability to bring Nigerian stories to life with vivid detail and emotional depth, the film is expected to set new standards in the portrayal of African historical epics.

The film’s production, handled by Al Notions Studios and Anthill Studios, benefits from high production values and a compelling script written by Niyi Akinmolayan and Yinka Olaoye. Mo Bimpe, a notable actress and producer, and also Lateef’s wife, plays a crucial role in bringing this project to fruition, highlighting the collaborative effort behind the scenes.

For Lateef Adedimeji, Lisabi is a deeply personal project. He dedicates the film to the Egba people, the entire Yoruba race, and the global black community, emphasising its significance beyond mere entertainment.

As anticipation builds for its release, Lisabi gears up to be a cinematic milestone that celebrates Yoruba heritage and honours the enduring legacy of one of its greatest heroes.
