In a bold leap for African entertainment, Nollywood is taking control of its global narrative with the launch of a premium streaming platform. Created exclusively for Nigerian films and African storytelling. Set to debut globally, Kava emerges from a partnership between Filmhouse Group and Inkblot Studios, two of Nigeria’s most renowned film production companies.
KAVA is set to deliver culturally rich, globally accessible stories from Africa’s vibrant film industry, often cited as the world’s second-largest. It aims to position itself not just as a streaming platform but as a digital ecosystem. In a press briefing held on Thursday, July 24, the goal is to amplify African voices, preserve cultural heritage, and offer audiences a streaming experience rooted in African authenticity.
According to Kene Okwuosa, CEO of Filmhouse Group and Co-CEO of KAVA “This is more than a platform—it’s an ecosystem for African content, We’re not just streaming films—we’re building the digital infrastructure for the future of African cinema. We want audiences to feel the joy of seeing their language, humour, struggles, and triumphs on screen. To feel seen, and like they’re part of something bigger.”
At launch, KAVA will roll out over 30 premium Nollywood titles, including post-theatrical exclusives, beloved classics, and brand-new works from both local and diaspora filmmakers. The platform plans to release new content weekly—spanning drama, romance, thrillers, epics, and comedy—to reflect the breadth and energy of African storytelling. And grow to the point of at least 10 titles added monthly.
Also shared is the aim to create African-specific genres. In a way that Nollywood grows into creating its own genre tags as opposed to being boxed by already laid down categories.
Further sharing that one of the ways it aims to achieve this is via the collaborative production of film content. So, the platform wouldn’t focus on acquisition but would also have original movies created.
Chinaza Onuzo, Co-founder of Inkblot and Co-CEO of KAVA, added, “KAVA is where cutting-edge technology meets cultural storytelling. For creators, it’s a new economy—one that champions who we are, as Africans and as artists.”
He also expressed the integral plan to make the platform welcoming for emerging filmmakers. As the target isn’t only for already established filmmakers but also for new takers, looking for a home to showcase their works.
Backed by Inkblot’s trailblazing history with Amazon Prime and Netflix, and Filmhouse’s dominance in West African cinemas and film distribution, KAVA brings unmatched industry expertise to the table. Together, they aim to set a new global standard for African cinema.
Although no specific date has been shared, KAVA will launch in August 2025.
