In a landmark move set to redefine Africa’s broadcasting landscape, French media giant Canal+ has finalized its acquisition of MultiChoice Group. Thus gaining complete control of the continent’s foremost pay-tv platforms — DStv and GOtv. The $3 billion takeover follows formal approval from South Africa’s Competition Tribunal, clearing the path for the finalization of the deal by October 2025.

Canal+ has purchased the remaining 55% stake in MultiChoice that it previously did not own. This move strengthens its position as a major player in African media. As part of the agreement, Canal+ will invest R26 billion (approximately USD 1.4 billion) over the next three years. This investment will enhance local content production, maintain MultiChoice’s headquarters in South Africa, and amplify African narratives across its platforms.

This deal goes beyond a typical corporate merger. It marks a strategic shift toward cross-continental content integration. Canal+ already offers a portfolio that includes French, English, and Portuguese programming. With this, the company is well-positioned to serve Africa’s diverse and multilingual audiences in over 50 countries.

By acquiring MultiChoice, Canal+ aims to boost regional storytelling and nurture local talent. It also plans to deliver culturally resonant programming. This moment represents a major turning point in Africa’s evolving media landscape. It could increase the continent’s presence on the global entertainment stage and reshape the future of pay-TV in Africa.

Beyond subscriber services, MultiChoice has made significant socio-economic contributions. Its creative initiatives include the MultiChoice Talent Factory, which has trained thousands of aspiring filmmakers. And the commissioning of Africa Magic channels in local languages like Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba. These ventures have not only amplified regional storytelling but also generated substantial economic impact.

MultiChoice in Nigeria has invested heavily in local content production and infrastructure, contributing billions in taxes, local spending, and creative industry growth. Eyes are peeled to see what becomes of all the interesting and impacting brackets Multichoice has offered over the years.
